Although children are not expected to begin writing until much later than preschool because they do not develop a proper pencil grip until the age of six years, we include a lot of activities to develop both gross and fine motor skills to strengthen the muscles needed for proper pencil grip.  For example, the children will do tracing and writing activities, but, more importantly, they will work with playdough, trace letters in sand and salt trays, practice cutting, sewing, and fine construction activities.
